Don Rodolfo Torrontes

Don Rodolfo Torrontes 2012, Cafayate Valley, Salta, Argentina, High Altitude Vinyard , Vina Cornejo Costas, ORGANIC  200 year old winery.

Dry, crisp, floral with notes of apricots and peaches.

We first tasted this excellent white wine at the Back Room Wine Bar in Pagosa Springs.

One of us wasn’t a fan of white wines but instantly became a fan of this floral white wine. He said it was ” like a party in his mouth!”

The bouquet and taste was as if fruity flowers were melted into a golden liquid.

Obsession wine

rate wine 1 glasses

Obsession Symphony Wine bottled by Ironstone Vineyards American Canyon, Napa Country, California

This white wine is a cross between a Muscat and Grenache Gris. It is sweet and supposedly best when served chilled and just opened.

We found it too sweet with an odd aftertaste. We drank one glass then used it in a Risotto rice dish rather than drinking it. We don’t want to waste any wine even if it is not to our taste.

Blue Winged Olive, Wines of the San Juan

We first tasted this white wine at the 2012 Wines of the San Juan’s Harvest Festival.

It is a crisp, sweet Riesling and very refreshing. It had the taste of crisp green apples and peaches blended together. It is a perfect summer or fall white wine.

Blue teal

rate wine 3 glasses

Blue Teal American Moscato, Blue Teal Vineyard, Deming N.M.

We tasted this wine as part of a trio of similar wines at the St. Clair Winery in Farmington, N.M.

This particular wine was the sweetest of the trio.  It has an expressive bouquet of honeysuckle and flowers.

We found it best served chilled. It is another perfect warm weather wine or as a dessert wine.

Moscato

rate wine 2 glasses

Electra Orange Moscato, Quad Winery

This Moscato is as sweet as any other we have tasted. If you do not like sweet wines this is definitely not for your palate.

It is effervescent and reminds us of champagne. It has a bouquet of flowers and tastes of peaches, apricot and melons. It has a low alcohol content.

We have a split decision with this wine. He finds it over the top sweet like soda and I enjoy the bubbly sweet taste.

I, (the she of our duo), found it a fun wine for summer sipping in the hammock or under a big shady old tree. It makes a great dessert wine when chilled. Ice cubes are not forbidden as with most wines.

cupcake wine

rate wine 2 glasses

Cupcake, Chardonnay, 2011, California

This inexpensive Chardonnay is an unexpected taste treat. It has a light citrus bouquet.

It is simple and clean. Great with cheese and crackers or any seafood dish.

Great with sharing with friends.

Broquel wine)

rate wine 2 glasses

Broquel Torrontes, 2010, I.G. Valle Cafayate, Salta, Argentina

Most Torrontes are very floral in bouquet and taste, but this one was more like a generic white wine such as a Chardonnay.

It is not a Torrontes you want share if you intend to impress your friends with it. However, not all is lost if you ever get a white wine that is not impressive or to your taste.

NOTE: Here is tip.  Go to our Specialty Wine and Liquer section.

See the St. Germain liquer selection. If you add one ounce or less to taste, to your average bottle of white wine of any variety, the wine is upgraded to a very pleasing drink. Many liquers can be added to average wines for blending into surprising taste treats.

Durango Gold-Four leaves winery-peach

rate wine 3 glasses

Durango Gold, Peach Chardonnay, Four Leaves Winery, Colorado

We found this a lovely Chardonnay with the rich taste of just- picked sun kissed peaches.

It is not too sweet. Best served chilled. It is great in any season.

villa wold gev....

rate wine 3 glasses

Gewurztraminer, Villa Wolf, 2011, Product of Germany

We agree with the label that this is a spicy, aromatic white wine. It was easy to drink with no discernible aftertaste.

Not too sweet, not too dry, just pleasant. A good wine for friends and conversation, if they like white wine.

We believe it is best served cold rather than room temperature.

Mount Nelson

rate wine 3 glasses

Mount Nelson, Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand

While traveling in Taos, New Mexico, we noticed a small bistro called  the Downtown Bistro. We were pleasantly surprised they had a wine list with a number of wines we have never heard of before. One of those was the the Mount Nelson Sauvignon Blanc.

Our server allowed us to taste before purchasing a glass, as it was a bit expensive. The description by the vintner is accurate. They say, “Pale yellow color with green highlights. Delicate and fragrant nose with citrus, floral and some herbal notes. Dry with refreshing, crisp acidity, balance and length. “

We have since learned many New Zealand wines are described in this manner. However, this one really lives up to the described flavor. Very refreshing on the dry side but not too dry. A bit more expensive than other whites but worth the money.

Turning Leaf

rate wine 3 glasses

Turning Leaf, White Zinfandel, 2011 California

This inexpensive  Zinfandel was a wonderful taste treat. Very pleasing. It has the aroma of cranberries and flavors of watermelon and strawberry.

A nice wine to share with friends or while curled up with a good book.

Zolo

rate wine 2 glasses

Zolo, Torrentes, 2011, Product of Argentina

The Zolo label says it  has ” aromas reminiscent of delicate and elegant floral and citrus. In the mouth it is fresh, sweet and balanced.”

We say we could not detect any of those aromas and flavors so they must be very delicate. This reminded us of an average white wine.

It would not be a Torrentes that we could compare to a more superior Don Rodolfo version.

Blue Teal Reisling

rate wine 2 glasses

Blue Teal Riesling, Blue Teal Vineyards

We found this Riesling a little sweet but not as sweet as a Moscato. It was part of the trio of wines we tasted at St. Clair Winery. Due to our tastes in wine, I (she) found this lovely and extremely pleasing to my taste buds. It was one of  the best Riesling I have tasted.  On the other hand, he does enjoy a white wine, but this one was too sweet for him.

À chacun son goût (To each his own).

st clair Gurwitz..

Gewurztraminer, St. Clair Winery, N.M.

We found this Gewurztraminer similar to a semi-sweet Riesling wine. It has the subtle taste of apricots and a hint of sweet spices. Easy to drink and enjoy  while conversing with friends or curled up next to a roaring fire watching it snow.

St Christopherwine 029

We found this a very smooth light white wine. It has a nice floral bouquet. It is lightly sweet and very enjoyable.

Girls Are Meaner, San Juan Winery

While at the 2013 San Juan Harvest Festival, we tasted this delectable white wine. We agree with the winery’s review.

“A fruit salad in a glass! A “gypsy” semi-sweet Gewurztraminer with a spicy attitude. This simple wine weaves a magical spell straight from the vine to the glass…semi-sweet with the exotic hint of rose petals.”

Great wine to share with friends or take a magical moment  for yourself.

rate wine 3 glassesPale Morning Dun, San Juan Winery

Another treat for our taste buds at the San Juan Harvest Festival. This is a very smooth wine and very enjoyable at any time of year.

The Winery review is accurate. It has a” bright bouquet of citrus notes, melons and passion fruit. It is a  blend of Chenin Blanc, Muscat, and Ugni Blanc.”

Little black Dress wine

rate wine 3 glasses

Little Black Dress, 2010 Riesling, California

We agree with the label,  “Transforms the everyday into something special.”  This inexpensive wine is very light and would be perfect for any occasion from staying home with a glass in the hot tub to sitting in a jazz club listening to sexy music.

Snoqualmie white

rate wine 3 glasses

Snoqualimie, 2012 Winemaker’s Select, Riesling, Columbia Valley

We found this inexpensive white wine a wonderful treat. It has a slight effervescence but very enjoyable. It is a light white wine bursting with the taste of fresh harvested peaches. The pleasant finish remains on your tongue long after the glass is empty. This wine can be shared with friends or over a delectable meal.

Barnard Griffin wine

rate wine 2 glasses

Barnard Griffin Fume Blanc, Columbia Valley, 2001

This is a  classic Sauvignon Blanc style wine.

It would go well with light seafood or
as an ordinary everyday white. It has a light lemon aftertaste.

We found it a pleasant but not memorable wine.

Chateau St. Michele Reisling

rate wine 2 glasses

Chateau St. Michelle,  Gewürztraminer

This Gewürztraminer is  a nice semi-sweet wine with the taste and aroma of floral and fruit.

It is good but we have found other Gewürztraminer that were more impressive.

butterfly wine

rate wine 2 glasses

Butterfly Kiss, Moscato, Chile 2012

This is a floral Moscato with the hint of apricot and orange.

We found this an average sweet wine. The label and name are very pretty and beckons one to try this wine.

bella donna wine

rate wine 1 glasses

Bella Donna Moscato d’Asti ,2010, Italy

The name of this wine in Italian means “Beautiful Woman.”  It is from the Piedmont region of Italy.

As a Moscato it is sweet and fruity. We found this white wine not memorable and used most of the bottle for cooking.

Barefoot

rate wine 1 glasses

Barefoot, Pink Moscate, California

This is an inexpensive white wine. It has a fruity flavor but nothing memorable.

new age wineDSCF0052     rate wine 3 glasses

New Age, Argentina

We found this wine very unique and refreshing. It is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Torrontes.

It has a floral aroma and  is best served chilled with a lime wedge for an unforgettable taste treat.

schmidt rielsingDSCF0048rate wine 2 glasses

Schmitt Sohne, Riesling Auslese, Germany

As expected with a Riesling, this is a slightly sweet wine.

We found it best served chilled.  It goes well with cheese and fruit.

Wine reviews rate this Riesling as outstanding, but we found it unimpressive.

Trader Joe’s Petit Reserve, Muscat, Oregon, 2012

This wine was not up to our taste standards. We would not recommend it even as a cooking wine.

rendevouz at 5600

rate wine 3 glasses

Rendezvous at 5600′, Wines of the San Juan, New Mexico

This is a relatively new white white wine from Wines of the San Juan.

We first tasted it at the 2013 Fall Festival. We knew we needed a bottle to add to our wine collection.

It is a dry wine but bursts with flavor.

apothic wine

rate wine 3 glasses

Apothic White,  2012, California

The label on the bottles says, “It is a smooth Chardonnay, vibrant Pinot Grigio and aromatic Riesling which create layers of tropical fruit complimented of hints of honey and vanilla.” Our first glass in tasting this wine was very pleasant and we agree that the flavor contains all of those elements. It was very enjoyable, refreshing and unique and unforgettable wine.

La Chiripada Late Harvest Riesling, 2012, Rio Embudo Vines

We sampled this wine while on our Northern New Mexico wine tour. From the first taste we knew we wanted a bottle.

It is intensely fruity bursting with the taste of ripe peaches, apricots and pears. It makes a delicious dessert wine to share with special friends or family.  Visit our Wine Tasting page for more information about this vineyard.

This wine is made with 100% New Mexico grapes, La Bajada White at Estrella Del Norte Vineyard is named for the original trail and road on La Bajada Hill.  Part of old Route 66, it contained more than a dozen switch backs in 3 miles.

We agree with the vintners description of the wine. It is ” sweet, crisp and fruity.” Great with food or served chilled.

This is more of a chick wine. Sweet and sexy like the name. It is bursting with ripe summer fruits. Share it with your girlfriends or alone.

De Loach chardonnay

rate wine 2 glasses

De Loach Chardonnay, 2013 California

According to the vineyard, “This wine has a natural crispness and fresh fruit flavors of apple and pear. ” We would like to add that this is a decent white wine suitable as a table wine. We used it for cooking in risotto and a french cream lemon caper wine sauce for fish. Which was excellent!

little black dress moscuto      rate wine 2 glassesLittle Black Dress, 2010 Moscato, California

We found this wine a nice treat and very inexpensive. It is full bodied and has floral notes and a bit of spice. This brand has never let us down. It is a very sweet wine, so we recommend it as a dessert wine.

Picabo Snyder     rate wine 3 glasses  Picabo, Snyder Winery

While visiting Snyder Winery, we noticed a lovely blue wine bottle that called to us. According the the sign near the bottle, it was a limited addition called Picabo. Since wineries put their best wines in blue bottles, we thought this might be worth the risk, buying before trying. We decided to save this wine for New Year’s Eve. We are happy to report it did not disappoint.

It had a lovely floral scent which reminded us of elder flowers which is the flavor of St. Germaine and pear. Our first taste confirmed the pear and another fruit we can’t quite define but was extremely pleasant. Overall, this blend of Riesling and Moscato was enjoyable. We enjoyed this wine with a gourmet meal of fish. It was one of the more expensive bottles at the winery and worth it. The bottle came from Italy and was imported Italian blue glass.
